Hardin ISD Athletic Pre-Participation Physical Exam Policy

Although the UIL only requires that an athlete have a pre-participation physical exam (PPE) once in the seventh grade and once the athlete enters high school in Hardin ISD it is now required of every athlete every year.  The district requires this because of the growth and maturation process of the student athlete.  The senior in high school is not physically or mentally the same as that same person who entered high school four years previous.

1.                 All athletes in boys and girls sports as well as cheerleaders at Hardin ISD must have a PPE on file in order to participate.  In addition they also will be required to fill out a form that includes the, emergency contact information, and medical insurance information.

2.                 All PPE will be kept and managed in the athletic training room office by the Head Athletic Trainer at the high school.  At the junior high the boy’s coordinator will keep the boy’s PPE and the girl’s coordinator will keep the girl’s PPE.

3.                 The PPE must have been performed less than one year prior to the participation.  Although it is acceptable to have a PPE from the previous school year that is less than one year old it is not encouraged.  Each athlete should be strongly encouraged to get a PPE prior to the first day of practice of their chosen sport each year so as not to run into a problem in the middle of the season.

4.                 The PPE will be required to be on file with the appropriate person on the athlete’s campus PRIOR to the first day of after school practice for the athlete’s chosen sport.

5.                 Athletes ARE required to have an up to date PPE to participate in the athletic period during the school day.

6.                 Athletes are NOT required to get a PPE for every sport in which they participate.  One per year is acceptable.

7.                 If an athlete transfers in from another school district they will be allowed to participate in after school practice as soon as their PPE from their previous district is on file with the appropriate campus representative provided it was performed less than one year previous to the date of practice.

8.                 A PPE performed by a medical doctor, an osteopath, a certified nurse practioner, or a licensed physician’s assistant is acceptable.

9.                 Parent and student signatures must be on the PPE and also on the acknowledgement of UIL rules for the form to be considered valid.

10.             If there is any question as to the validity of the PPE it is the responsibility of the appropriate campus representative to verify said validity.
